on the edge of freedom

ACRYLIC • 12x12"

STATUS: SOLD

Bounce. I came upon this beautiful black stallion as I drove around a narrow bend up on a ridge in Spring Creek Basin. It was March 2007. I was alone on this gray day when I suddenly saw him standing still, alone below the ridge I was on.  Neither of us moved.  He was like a sentry in this vast land, guarding, but I could not see what.  I was mesmerized. I got back in my car and drove down the ridge to get below and closer to this mustang, but when I got there, he had vanished.  I never forgot how composed he was and so peaceful in that moment.  Thankfully I saw him later over the years. Every time I painted Bounce, the same moment of our first meeting came to the forefront of my memory. Not until after the 2007 BLM helicopter round up was I to learn his name from TJ Holmes and that Bounce was about 20 years old. She has documented all of the mustangs and named them.
