moments with wild horses #229

One of the first times I saw Chrome, a beautiful gray mustang stallion, was in August of 2012 in Spring Creek Basin. With guide and friend TJ Holmes, we were able to get closer to him, by moving extremely slowly while in full view, talking quietly. TJ has lived with the mustangs for a long time. They know and trust her. This wild stallion had a large family of mares and young offspring. He was calmer than some of the other stallions in the Basin and good to his mares by not pushing them to keep moving on. Chrome was a confident leader. Over the years I kept returning to see him many times, never tiring of sketching and painting him. Because each mustang, like humans, has its own unique personality, different horses evoke different emotions and appreciation for them within me. Chrome and Bounce were two stallions I felt peaceful around. For both of them I often chose a deep blue color, suitable for their quiet strength and poise, painting in strong broad negative and positive spaces with my long, wide palette knife.
